Federe, the outcome of a site-specific project, takes place in the “Lanificio Paoletti” wool mill in Italy. At the center of the film lies the interaction between the factory’s employees and the mechanical looms and the way this interaction structures local social and economic life. Sounds of mechanical weaving fade into the music of Banda di Follina, the band originally formed by Lanificio’s very first employees in 1795. The melody connects the factory’s interior to the Dolomiti mountains, which provide the Alpago wool used in the mill, and ultimately blends with the sounds of the sheep and the calls of the local shepherds.
